Manage Domains, Subdomains, and Alias Domains

With Plesk, you can design your web presence flexibly – whether by adding new domains, creating subdomains for specific content, or setting up alias domains for redirection. This guide walks you through the respective steps.

Add a New Domain

To add an additional domain to your hosting package:

  1. Navigate to Websites & Domains.
  2. Click on Add Domain.
  3. Fill in the following fields:
  4. Domain Name: Enter the desired domain (e.g., my-new-domain.com).
  5. Webspace: Select the appropriate webspace.
  6. Hosting Type: Choose Website Hosting.
  7. IP Address: Keep the default IP address or select another one if available.
  8. Username & Password: Set FTP credentials for the domain.
  9. Click OK to add the domain.

Note: Ensure that the DNS records of your domain correctly point to the server. For more information, refer to the guide on DNS Management.

Create a Subdomain

Subdomains are ideal for structuring different areas of your website, such as blog.my-domain.com or shop.my-domain.com.

  1. Go to Websites & Domains.
  2. Click on Add Subdomain.
  3. Enter the desired subdomain name in the Subdomain Name field (e.g., blog).
  4. In the Document Root field, specify the directory where the subdomain's files will be stored. By default, a new directory will be created.
  5. Click OK to create the subdomain.

Tip: After creating the subdomain, you can install an SSL certificate to secure the connection. For more information, refer to the guide on SSL Certificate Management.

Set Up an Alias Domain

Alias domains redirect visitors from one domain to the main domain without requiring separate content. This is useful if you own multiple domains that should point to the same website.

  1. Navigate to Websites & Domains.
  2. Click on Add Domain Alias.
  3. Fill in the following fields:
  4. Domain Alias Name: Enter the alias domain (e.g., my-alias-domain.com).
  5. Primary Domain: Select the main domain the alias should point to.
  6. Enable the desired options:
  7. Synchronize DNS zone with the primary domain: Changes to the DNS zone of the main domain are automatically applied to the alias.
  8. Enable mail service: Emails sent to the alias domain are forwarded to the corresponding mailboxes of the main domain.
  9. Enable web service: The website of the main domain is also accessible via the alias domain.
  10. Redirect with HTTP code 301: Search engine-friendly redirection that permanently points the alias to the main domain.
  11. Click OK to create the alias.

Note: Alias domains use the content of the main domain. If you want to provide different content for different domains, consider using separate domains or subdomains.

Additional Notes

  • DNS Configuration: Ensure that the DNS records for new domains or subdomains are correctly set so they are accessible.
  • SSL Certificates: Each domain and subdomain can have its own SSL certificate installed. Use the Plesk extension SSL It! for this purpose.
  • Resource Limits: Be aware of the limits of your hosting package regarding the number of domains, subdomains, and alias domains.
